Healing and Filling the Missing Building Blocks
Gentle Reparenting offers a foundational contribution to healing psychology by viewing many adult emotional struggles not simply as disorders, but as the result of developmental needs that were never fully met. When those missing emotional building blocks are identified and supplied later in life, healing and continued psychological development occur quite naturally.
Gentle Reparenting is a way of putting this foundational approach to healing psychology into practice.
Many adult psychological struggles may come from childhood stages that were never fully completed. Instead of seeing a person as “disordered,” we can recognize that important developmental building blocks may be missing—and that these blocks can still be filled later in life.
Discovering missing building blocks from one or more stages of childhood is not a cause for discouragement. It is an invitation to healing.
One of the most effective ways to heal these early developmental stages is through Gentle Reparenting: gradually receiving the acceptance, safety, protection, encouragement, and guidance that may have been missing during infancy, toddlerhood, or later childhood.
These new healing experiences can become the building blocks that were originally missing, allowing us to become more fully the healthy and capable adults we were always meant to be.

What Gentle Reparenting Is
Discovering missing building blocks from one or more stages of childhood is not a cause for discouragement. It is an invitation to healing.
You can replace negative early messages with new, healing statements that help create a stable, lighter, and more functional ego state, and gently, at your own pace,
heal traumas and release emotional pain.
One of the most effective ways to heal these early developmental stages is to find one or more safe, trustworthy people with whom you can gradually experience the nurturing that was missing during infancy, toddlerhood, or later childhood stages.
During a therapy session, it is often helpful to allow yourself to become "little" again for a time. As you safely revisit that stage, you can receive the acceptance, protection, encouragement, guidance, or other developmental needs that were not fully met the first time.
This process is called Gentle Reparenting. It allows new experiences to become the building blocks that were originally missing.
Jeannie Alvin's pioneering work and discovery of this healing process is presented in her book, Gentle Reparenting, the Original Guide, also known as Heart to Heart Healing.
A Guided Healing Option
When Therapy is Not Available
Some people cannot afford therapy, live in a remote area, or feel too frightened to seek help from another person. For them, I created a guided healing meditation called
Bad Childhood, Bad Problems—Do Over.
You can begin creating a healthier, more functional inner foundation and receive some of the emotional building blocks that may have been missing during childhood.
This video includes the healing statements used in Gentle Reparenting.
During the meditation, you are guided through the countryside to a peaceful pond. Beside the pond, you create a beautiful throne and invite the loving female and male aspects of God to join you—using whatever names or understanding feel right to you.
You may call them Mother and Father God, Divine Love, Universal Consciousness, or simply nurturing female and male energy.
You do not need to follow any particular religion or belief system.
You are then invited to speak openly about what happened to you, what has hurt you, and what you needed but did not receive. You can pause the video and speak as much or as little as you wish. As you enter the peaceful pond and relax, you are guided through statements and healing experiences that have been connected with profound and sometimes miraculous changes.
You may move through the meditation slowly, pause whenever needed, and return to it as often as it feels helpful.

When Fear Arises
If your early years were traumatic, you may notice intense fear arising even before beginning this work. Your inner child may fear that the painful events of the past will happen again. These fears may arise while searching for a safe therapist or healing partner, or during the first sessions themselves.
This reaction is understandable. It is not a sign that healing is impossible. Rather, it often reflects the understandable caution of a child who once lived in an unsafe world.
As new experiences of safety and acceptance gradually replace the old experiences, many emotions may naturally arise. These feelings can be welcomed, experienced, understood, and discussed with your healer or therapist. As they are processed within a safe relationship, the missing building blocks gradually develop and become filled, allowing greater emotional freedom, healthier relationships, continued personal and spiritual growth, and, in general, a happier and more fulfilling life.
Healing the early stages of development not only transforms psychological well-being—it also lays a stronger foundation for higher levels of consciousness and spiritual evolution.

How Healing Continues
Healing these early developmental stages is not about remaining a child. It is about completing the stages that were interrupted so that you can live more fully as the healthy, capable adult you were always meant to become.
For the earliest developmental stages, one-to-one healing with a safe therapist or healing partner is often the most beneficial, since infancy and toddlerhood are times when a child naturally develops within a close, nurturing relationship with a caregiver.
As the inner child grows and progresses through later developmental stages, group therapy, support groups, workshops, or other healthy group experiences can become especially valuable. These settings provide opportunities to develop friendships, cooperation, communication, healthy boundaries, problem-solving skills, and a sense of belonging. They allow many of the later developmental building blocks to be experienced and strengthened in the company of others.
No matter where you begin on the ladder of human development, it is never too late to fill the missing building blocks. Every stage can be healed. Every step forward enriches your life and contributes to your continued psychological, emotional, and spiritual evolution.
As you become more whole, your unique gifts can shine more brightly. You become more fully the person you were always meant to be, bringing greater love, wisdom, joy, and contribution to the world. Healing yourself is one of the greatest gifts you can offer both to your own life and to humanity.

Healing Naturally Evolves
Healing is not a one-size-fits-all process. Different stages of development have different needs, and those needs are often best met through different healing experiences.
As we continue to grow, our healing naturally evolves from the safety of one-to-one relationships into the richness of healthy relationships within families, friendships, groups, and the larger community.

One Reader's Experience
A young person discovered Gentle Reparenting in a used bookstore and later wrote:
"There have been massive benefits in my normal everyday adult life.
I've become more spiritually attuned, happier, more kind and open to other people, have made many new friends, and find synchronicities popping up everywhere. I've also had more energy—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
It's almost as if the reparenting work has pulled a wrench out of the engine, and now I'm operating at the level I've always been meant for in mind, body, and soul!
The vast majority of my time is spent in adult mode still, even though I do a lot of regression work. And I think over time I'll spend more and more time in adult mode and need the reparenting less and less. But for now, I think the process of Gentle Reparenting is still extremely healing and nurturing for my soul."

How Gentle Reparenting Was Developed
This work grew from my own healing and from understanding why that healing occurred. I later developed a quiz and individualized therapy recommendations and used them with clients in a large clinic. Many had made only partial progress in therapy; when their unmet developmental needs were addressed, a number of them healed deeply.
I also taught this approach to psychologists, psychiatrists, and other healing professionals. They incorporated the principles into their own work and saw similar results with clients who had previously been unable to heal fully. The development and clinical application of this work were documented in my master’s thesis and in the Library of Congress.
